how can i tell if i have a double layer disk? It looks like both sides could be burned to. One side looks like a normal bottem side of a cd and the other side looks the same but purpule. There are both Dual-Layer DVD discs and Double-Sided DVD discs. Dual-Layer is sometimes called "Double Layer" and I've seen discs advertised as such. (Those ads are for dual-layer DVDs when you look closer.) Dual layer disks are usually marked with a DL (such as DL 8x) on them. They are not burned by flipping over the disc. You must have a dual-layer capable DVD burner that will burn both layers while recording to the drive. On the other hand, double-sided DVDs are burned by flipping them over. The only ones of those I've seen are for DVD-RAM burners and require a caddy to insert the disc into. One thing that's always true for dual-sided DVDs is that the labels/text and manufacturer's logo is always on the hub'/spindle area. They can't put the usual label and coating on the "top" as both sides need to be clear to allow writing. Where you might have seen this before is movies on DVD that include both the wide screen and standard screen formats on opposite sides of the disc. The title will only be on the hub along with the "Side A" and "Side B" label.
